Design of Wide-beam Feeder Containerships

OMT has provided the basic design package of four 3,500 TEU containership series constructed at Cosco Zhoushan Shipyard (China) for CMA-CGM. Compared with typical vessels of same length the wide-beam design offers around 15% higher homogeneous container intake and up to 15% lower consumption per TEU depending on the weight of the containers.

All vessels have been delivered through 2018 and 2019 and with these vessels CMA-CGM are modernizing their fleet operating in the French West Indies. The first vessel ‘CMA CGM FORT DE FRANCE’ was delivered on January 10th, 2019. It is 219 meters long and 35.6 meters wide with high reefer capacity. This is the first of a series of four container ships named after French West Indian forts and flying the French flag.

The vessel design is based on the OMT developed MERMAID feeder platform, which ranges from around 1500 TEU to 5,600 TEU and offers large flexibility as regards speed, reefer intake, cranes and sulphur scrubber depending on Owner’s requirements.

The hull lines were developed based on the operational profile provided for the specific trade. OMT also evaluated the performance of the wide-beam design with a design with typical beam of same length, and the wide-beam design proved to have superior performance in terms of intake, transport efficiency and ballast water requirements.

OMT is continuously engaged in design of advanced and energy efficient containerships meeting latest standards for energy efficiency and environmental compliance. The full reference list of containerships designed by OMT’s design team includes numerous containerships of various sizes:
